Center for Voter Education Clarifies N.C. Voter Registration Process

RALEIGH - Many North Carolinians recently received an automated telephone call from a national organization asking people to return a voter registration form so that they can vote. Whether this was a well-intentioned effort to engage voters or a deliberate plan to confuse citizens, it is important to clarify how voting works in North Carolina.

Here is what North Carolinians need to know in order to vote in the North Carolina primary election.

IF ALREADY REGISTERED TO VOTE:

Voters may go to their precinct and cast a ballot on May 6.

OR

Voters may take advantage of ONE-STOP EARLY VOTING.

IF SOMEONE IS NOT ALREADY REGISTERED TO VOTE, OR IF THEY HAVE MOVED SINCE LAST REGISTERING:

The deadline to use traditional registration methods has passed, but a new law allows previously unregistered voters and relocated voters to register and vote at a one-stop early voting site.

ONE-STOP VOTING FACTS:

One-stop voting runs from April 17 to May 3. To find a local one-stop voting site, voters can call their county board of elections office or the N.C. Center for Voter Education, toll-free, at 1-877-25-VOTER (1-877-258-6837).

In order to register at a one-stop early voting site, voters need to show a document that has their name and current address. This could be a utility bill, a bank statement or a government-issued I.D., such as a driver’s license or vehicle registration.

The N.C. Center for Voter Education implores all voters to educate themselves on the many races in North Carolina’s primary election. More information on voting and candidates in this year’s election is available at www.ncvoterguide.org.

The N.C. Center for Voter Education is a Raleigh-based nonprofit and nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving elections in North Carolina.
