Center Launches ‘Go Vote 06 PSA Contest’ to Boost Voter Turnout
RALEIGH - The N.C. Center for Voter Education is now accepting entries for the “Go Vote 06 PSA Contest,” with categories in video, audio and graphic art.
The contest’s divisions are high school, college and non-student (open to anyone not currently enrolled in high school or college). The theme is “go vote.”
Winning contestants will receive prizes, along with having their entries promoted as part of the “Go Vote 06” project, and possibly broadcast or published through media outlets across North Carolina.
Entries are due by Oct. 16, and must be nonpartisan, meaning they cannot support or oppose any candidate or political party.
Complete contest details are available online at www.ncvotered.com/govote, or by contacting the N.C. Center for Voter Education at 919-839-1200.
By launching the PSA (public service announcement) contest, the Center aims to turn the tide of low voter turnout historically seen in the state’s so-called “blue-moon elections.” These elections occur once every 12 years when the ballot has no much-buzzed-about race for the White House, governor’s mansion or U.S. Senate, as is the case in 2006.
“Although there are no traditionally high-profile races this year, voters will decide control of the state legislature and the majority of justices on the state’s Supreme Court, among other key contests,” says Chris Heagarty, executive director of the N.C. Center for Voter Education. “We’ve created this PSA contest with the hope that by tapping into the creative spirit of our state, we can inspire voters to go to the polls.”
The N.C. Center for Voter Education is a Raleigh-based nonprofit and nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving the quality of elections in North Carolina.
