Winners of Website Contest Announced
RALEIGH – With election day less than one week away, Internet junkies are using their computers not just to keep up on stock prices and sports scores. They’ll also be surfing the web looking for guidance on who to support in their city council races.
The North Carolina Center for Voter Education today announced three winners in its “Surf Your Way to the Ballot Box Contest,” a contest which aims to highlight the best political candidate websites in the 2001 North Carolina local election season.
The winners are:
Allen Joines for Mayor (Winston-Salem) – www.joinesformayor.com
Mike Nelson for Mayor (Carrboro) – www.electmikenelson.com
Allen Spalt for Alderman (Carrboro) – www.allenspalt.com
The three winners reflect the consensus views of a trio of distinguished political science professors from around North Carolina -- Ted Arrington of UNC-Charlotte, Thad Beyle of UNC-Chapel Hill, and Walt DeVries, of UNC-Wilmington.
Judging of the websites was performed based on a set of criteria that included: the quantity and quality of biographical material on the candidate; archives of speeches, press releases and newsletters; information on donations and campaign finance regulations; citizen engagement; and accessibility of the site.
Winners of the contest will have their websites linked to the Center for Voter Education’s webpage, www.ncvotered.com, for one week, and will be publicized in the Center’s electronic mailing list and featured in its quarterly newsletter.
The N.C. Center for Voter Education is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality and responsiveness of the state’s election system. Former US Senator Robert Morgan serves as Chairman of the Board.
