Read Up, Go Vote
RALEIGH - With campaigning in full swing and "no excuse" early voting underway across the state, the NC Center for Voter Education is encouraging voters to get informed, and to get out and vote.
As part of its "Go Vote" campaign, the Center has added a new section to its website called "Why I Vote" which features personal comments from Gov. Jim Hunt, former UNC basketball coach Dean Smith, former NC State football star (and now St. Louis Rams star) Torry Holt, among others, on the importance of voting.
The "Why I Vote" section is available on the Center's website, www.ncvotered.com.
"We want to give people some inspiration to get out and vote," said Jesse Rutledge, the director of communications for the Center. "These messages are all nonpartisan and very clear: voting is important, so let's not ignore our responsibility."
The "Go Vote" campaign was launched in August and initially included two televised public service announcements and an online voterís guide. The "Why I Vote" section was added to make people think about how valuable democracy is, said Rutledge.
The Center for Voter Education, which studies election reform issues and seeks to increase voter participation, is encouraging people to take advantage of the new early voting provisions which were designed to make voting easier.
"Early voting is a great idea, and the people of North Carolina should take advantage of the added convenience," noted Rutledge.
Under the provisions passed by the N.C. General Assembly, voters may cast their ballot at their county board of elections office between October 16th and November 3rd. Note that early voting will not be permitted the Saturday, Sunday or Monday before the election on Tuesday, November 7th.
Some counties have even set-up "satellite" voting locations at venues such as public libraries to make voting more convenient. Call your county's board of elections office for more information.
